Our mission is to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and increase access for remote communities. Energy is impactful when it is productive for work, connectivity, training, and creating opportunity. These projects are the “heart” of what technology can do.
Digital Community Centers (DCCs)
These solar-powered, internet-enabled computer centers serve people living in unelectrified and isolated communities.
With our partners, New Sun Road is empowering women in more than 20 remote Guatemalan communities with digital leadership, business skills, and gender-based violence awareness. The DCCs offer computer literacy for students, resources for women entering the workforce, and educational opportunities for youth and girls.
People centered approach
In target communities, each project is designed to meet community-defined solutions based on interviews and surveys exploring economic, gender, connectivity, electrical and educational needs.
Training is based on the Guatemalan Ministry of Education Curriculo Nacional Base, Microsoft Digital Skills Course, and community feedback. We launched the “Entrepreneurship digital skills, finances and productivity” Course in partnership with #EnMarchaDigital from UNDP.
By establishing Women’s Leadership Committees, local women are organized and democratically elected by the community. The snowflake model from Dr. Marshall Ganz (Harvard) establishes the shared purpose, defining roles and identifying the power map.
The women-led DCC in rural communities provide internet access, printing, and other digital services. Our programs provide business opportunities that have enabled women to grow on their income by more than 88%.
The DCCS offer community classes on positive masculinity and on gender-based violence awareness. We facilitate and improve the interactions between the Women’s Leadership Committee and the male- and long-established Community Council (Cocodes).
