To hear more about our founders’ story and the satisfaction of helping a community get electricity for the first time, listen to Lab to Startup Podcast hosted by Naresh Sunkara.
Today, 940 million people or 12% of the global population do not have access to electricity and 38% do not have Internet access. Armed with power systems knowledge, software innovation and IoT technology, the founders of New Sun Road developed a cloud-based platform to scale renewable energy and Internet access for remote communities around the world.
A Quest to Connect People, Technology and Opportunity
Jalel Sager, Ph.D. (CEO), Austin Cappon (networks & hardware), and Jonathan Lee (R&D) met at the University of California-Berkeley and connected over shared passions for technology, pragmatic problem solving and delivering renewable energy to underserved communities. They founded a Public Benefit Corporation with a strong mission. In less than eight years, New Sun Road has grown from delivering projects in extremely resource-limited locations in Vietnam and Uganda to prioritizing partnership and technology development for scale and impact. Through hands-on deployments, collaboration, grit and patience, New Sun Road has grown into a company with a platform that monitors and controls over 500 microgrids in 20 countries.
