New Sun Road Begins Demonstration Project with EPRI and Incubatenergy Labs

New Sun Road is pleased to announce that we have been selected to participate in the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) 2023 Incubatenergy Labs cohort

Founded in 1972, EPRI is the world’s preeminent independent, non-profit energy research and development organization, with offices around the world. EPRI’s trusted experts collaborate with more than 450 companies in 45 countries, driving innovation to ensure the public has clean, safe, reliable, affordable, and equitable access to electricity across the globe.

Incubatenergy® Labs is EPRI’s industry-leading global program for innovative startups. Startups engage with energy companies to demonstrate and deploy innovative solutions in targeted areas, in an accelerated fashion, through paid demonstration projects. An energy company summit and collaborative demonstrations program in one, the program links startup companies leading the advancement of electrification, decarbonization, and grid modernization with leading energy companies from around the world that have the capacity and desire to demonstrate and scale those innovations.

New Sun Road will be completing a demonstration project hosted by EPRI in collaboration with the EPRI SPIDER (Simulation Platform for Integration of DER) testbed in Charlotte, NC. Over the course of 16 weeks, New Sun Road will demonstrate optimized energy generation in a simulated, grid-connected microgrid following grid service entity power import/export constraints and time of use price. The results of this project will be presented at the Incubatenergy Labs Demo Day.

Dr. Jonathan Lee, Director of Research and Co-founder at New Sun Road, explains that “This project will push New Sun Road’s capabilities in microgrid control beyond optimizing local resources within the microgrid, enabling the microgrid to support utility distribution systems and mitigate the need for capacity upgrades as increased electrification stretches the grid.”

Dr. Ben York, Manager of DER Strategic Projects at EPRI looks forward to evaluating New Sun Road’s energy management solution for DERs. “Coordination of a diverse collection of DERs is going to be an increasingly important element of the future power system. This demonstration project will evaluate New Sun Road’s ability to integrate with and manage a collection of DERs which include solar, battery storage, and electric vehicle charging.”
