Grid Innovations: Microgrids and Fractal Grids

At a recent DistribuTECH panel, experts from Briggs & Stratton Energy Solutions and New Sun Road explored the complexities and potential of microgrids and fractal grids. This discussion highlighted the transformative possibilities of these innovative energy solutions.

Adrienne Pierce (New Sun Road), Sequoya Cross, Evan Wallace and Kris Evans (Briggs & Stratton)
Understanding Fractal Grids:

A fractal grid features a repeating pattern at different scales, showcasing self-similarity instead of a centralized structure. It allows for shared power generation, energy storage, and load balancing among neighbors or within specific groups.

Centralized versus fractal power sharing
Microgrids vs. Fractal Power Sharing:

A microgrid is a localized energy system that can function independently or alongside the main grid. It typically serves a specific community or geographic area with its own power generation and distribution. For instance, a facility might use solar panels and battery storage to create a local microgrid, powering various needs like lighting and EV charging. This facility can import power from the main grid during high demand or low electricity rates and operate independently during grid outages. This setup exemplifies a fractal grid, where generation assets and controllable equipment enable local power distribution.
